Job Type
Sample Healthcare
Sample transforms healthcare operations from a burden into a competitive advantage. The US leads the world in first launches of new treatments, yet our healthcare system sees clinicians spending 73% of their time on administrative work – we're on a mission to eliminate this friction that's choking America's engine of medical progress. We work with leading national providers, already have data from 75% of US oncology clinics, and our network is rapidly expanding across the nation.
Why this matters
Healthcare in America faces an existential challenge. As our population ages and chronic conditions multiply, clinicians and administrators shoulder an ever-growing burden under razor-thin margins. This administrative friction isn't just inefficient – it's dangerous. It leads to delayed diagnoses, missed treatments, and clinician burnout. As the pace of scientific discovery accelerates, maintaining America's role as the crucible of modern medicine depends on fixing these operational challenges.
Our product
We've built a platform that enables healthcare providers to create their own AI copilots, automating and accelerating their most critical operations. These copilots don't just speed up work – they capture valuable ground-truth data that makes our models smarter over time. As providers join our network, they become part of a network which can support patients across a network of specialists. Our rapid growth – hitting Series A revenue metrics just 10 months from day 1 – shows we're onto something big.
The opportunity
We’re building a generational company. As a founding engineer at Sample, you’ll face healthcare's most important problems and be given the freedom to solve them. Here are some of the problems our engineering team is working on today:
- Developing a framework and IDE for building AI-powered workflows, starting from copilots and evolving into full assistants
- Training cutting-edge models for medical record reasoning
- Creating pipelines that rapidly tune task-specific models using preference data from our co-pilots
These aren't just technical challenges – they're opportunities to reshape how healthcare operates. Success means diving deep into both the technical and domain complexities.
Who we're looking for
We're building a world-class team of engineers who are:
- Technically brilliant – you solve hard problems with elegant solutions
- Intensely curious – you dig deep to understand root causes, not just symptoms
- Delightful to work with – you make the team better by being part of it
Our founders were early engineers at companies like Retool (engineer #9) and Ambience Healthcare (first employee), so we know the value of investing early in great talent. We’re using a modern stack — TypeScript, Next.js, Python (FastAPI), Redis, and Postgres — but what matters most is your ability to learn and solve problems, not your familiarity with specific tools.
We're hiring across levels, and the scope of your role will grow with your experience.
Intermediate Engineers
Compensation: $130K - 180K + equity
You likely have 2–4 years of experience and are ready to own meaningful parts of the product. Sample is a small team, so success requires a baseline level of engineering independence: you should feel ready to ship to production and own large areas of the product. You’re optimizing for learning and want to work in the highest growth environment available.
You might have:
- Shipped production Python, TypeScript, and React (though we figure you’d pick anything up fast)
- Owned user relationships and developed strong product intuitions
- Thought about library and programming language design, maybe contributing to internal or open source frameworks
- Fine-tuned open source models
- Felt the tension between craft and velocity and built a sense around the tradeoffs
Senior / Staff Engineers
Compensation: $180K -250K + equity
You likely bring 5–15+ years of experience and have led major projects or technical decisions. You're comfortable balancing short-term needs with long-term architecture and love working across the stack — especially where the right solution isn’t obvious.
You might have:
- Owned a complex system with tight security + reliability constraints, and have a working knowledge of infrastructure automation
- Build libraries or frameworks and built a sense for developer experience
- Strong opinions about code quality, but know how to move fast
- Developed a habit of introspection, helping you grow and support the team around you
Regardless of your years of experience, you thrive in early-stage environments, roll up your sleeves to ship, and help raise the technical bar for the entire team.
At the moment, we're exclusively hiring to work in-person in San Francisco.
